ZEPHYR IN PINSTRIPS
By Craig Franklin

A year of personal discovery in the life of a nine year old genius

This is an autobiographical novel about a boy, orphaned at two and raised by a remarkable elderly couple. Although race relations is an underlying theme, the focus of the book is on the year he befriends an uneducated mountain man and details the fascinating influences they have on one another. Early on Craigy (the boy) talks about some aspects of his situation. "It was truly a tough spot for a nine year old - well, eight and two thirds, actually, and even that was not fully accurate. I was only about as tall as other seven and a half year old boys, yet I had been told by some test-wielding, itinerant doctors who came to my school that I was smarter than most eighteen year olds. I had long ago figured all of that established me as no one age at all. I prayed every night to wake up just average the next morning - a little taller and a whole lot dumber. It didn't happen." 147 pages, 1998

Early rising, ever smiling, sandy haired, nine year old Craigy Franklin is a bundle of joyful, perpetual energy. Clad in his trademark gray pinstripe overalls, he begins each day bopping along the byways of his small, mid-western home town, sampling the breakfast fare in a half dozen or so familiar kitchens. He brings a welcome breath of good cheer to each home he visits.
Craigy was born a genius and was orphaned at two - both of which he sees as mixed blessings. He lives with a wise and loving elderly couple, attends a school ill equipped to deal with his unique situation and regularly spars with Parson and Doc about all manner of philosophical and social issues.
Craigy is different - very different. There is no way to disguise that. Such a child comes along once in a generation. Adults love him and marvel at his mental powers and accomplishments. Most children avoid him for those same reasons, though he has a few truly good and supportive friends.
